At Rivers Way Guitar Tuition, every student’s musical journey is unique. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing someone grow in confidence, develop new skills and discover just how enjoyable learning the guitar can be.
This month, I caught up with Will, one of my younger students, to ask about his experience learning guitar, what he’s enjoyed most, and what advice he would give to anyone thinking about picking up a guitar for the first time.
Here’s what he had to say…
What made you decide to start learning the guitar with me?
You were the most local guitar teacher to me; however, I’m very glad you were.
Before your first lesson, did you have any worries or concerns about learning? If so, what were they?
I was worried that I wouldn’t be skilled enough in my first lesson to keep up properly.
Looking back, what has surprised you most about learning the guitar with me?
How straightforward and easy your lessons are to follow.
Looking back, what achievement are you most proud of since you started learning the guitar?
Being able to improvise over almost any chord progression. I still amaze myself that I can do it.
Was there a particular song, technique or lesson that made you think, “I’m really making progress now”?
When I first learnt how to alternate pick. It took me ages to get it right, but when it finally clicked it really made me feel like I’d made some serious progress.
If someone asked what it’s like to learn guitar with me, what would you tell them?
It’s a blast! Some of the most fun I’ll have in my week, and I’d recommend it ten times out of ten.
Has learning the guitar had any positive impact on your life outside of playing?
Playing the guitar has definitely helped me relax. Even if I’ve had a stressful day, I always know that at the end of it I can pick up my guitar and unwind.
Thinking back over your lessons so far, what has been the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
The theory behind music. It’s been the most valuable thing I’ve learnt because it allows you to understand and do almost anything with the instrument.
What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to your very first guitar lesson?
Don’t panic, and remember that no question is too silly to ask… even if you think it probably is!
What would you say to another young person who is thinking about learning the guitar but isn’t sure whether to start?
Definitely find a guitar teacher as soon as possible. I wouldn’t have made it anywhere near as far as I have without someone providing structured lessons and real-time feedback.
If you could jam with any guitarist or band, who would you choose?
Blink-182. They just look like they’re having so much fun whenever they play, and I’d definitely want to be part of that!
