Student Spotlight: Meet Ollie – From Iron Maiden Fan to Future Musician
At Rivers Way Guitar Tuition, every student’s journey starts somewhere. Sometimes it’s a particular song, a favourite guitarist or simply the desire to pick up an instrument and see where it takes you.
For Ollie, it was the guitar playing of Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith and Dave Murray that sparked the desire to learn.
What started with wanting to play the songs of a favourite band has developed into something much bigger. Ollie has progressed through his guitar grades, discovered a passion for improvisation and songwriting, and has now taken the exciting next step towards a career in music.
I caught up with Ollie to find out more about his guitar journey so far, what he’s enjoyed learning and where he’d like his playing to take him next.
Here’s what he had to say…
What made you decide that now was the right time to start learning guitar?
I had started listening to Iron Maiden and I really enjoyed Adrian Smith’s and Dave Murray’s guitar playing, to the point where I wanted to learn to play their songs myself.
Before your first lesson, did you have any worries or doubts about learning guitar?
No, I’d decided I wanted to learn and I was really excited to start.
What was your first lesson like, and how did you feel afterwards?
I was amazed at how quickly I was able to start playing because of Gordon’s help. Straight away I had things to go away and practise, which helped me progress.
What has surprised you most about learning guitar since you started?
I am surprised at how quickly I’ve learned and have been able to play songs I love which sound really difficult when you first listen to them.
Is there a particular song, technique, or skill that you’ve been especially excited to learn?
I’ve loved learning to play Iron Maiden songs and exploring different tunings to create my own riffs. I found learning music theory very interesting, and Gordon makes it really clear when he explains it.
What has been your biggest challenge so far, and how did you overcome it?
Starting my guitar grades has been my biggest challenge, and I’ve overcome it through practising a lot. I appreciate the feedback that Gordon has given me as it has helped me become the best I can be.
Was there a particular moment when you realised just how much you’d progressed?
I realised I had progressed a lot when I got the results for my Grade 3 and I had passed!
How does learning and playing guitar fit into your life outside of your lessons?
Gordon’s lessons have helped me to get a place at Solent University doing Music Performance and Production. He has inspired me to take on music as a career.
What achievement on guitar are you most proud of so far, and what would you like to achieve next?
I am most proud of being able to improvise fluently over a chord progression, and I would love to learn how to sweep pick.
What would you say to someone who has always wanted to learn guitar but is still wondering whether they should take the first step?
Go for it! Learning to play guitar was the best decision I have ever made, and it has given me confidence and a chance to be creative.
What began with listening to Iron Maiden and wanting to play their songs has developed into a genuine passion for music. Along the way, Ollie has worked through the challenges of graded exams, developed his understanding of music theory, explored improvisation and started creating his own riffs.
Most importantly, his guitar lessons have helped him discover what he wants to do next.
I’m incredibly proud that Ollie has chosen to continue his musical journey by studying Music Performance and Production at Solent University, and even more so that he now wants to pursue music as a career.
